The two routes answer different questions

Unilateral visa-free entry is tested by nationality, ordinary-passport type, allowed purpose and a 30-day stay. It does not require the traveler to continue to a third country.

The 240-hour transit policy is tested by the route itself: the journey must move through mainland China between different countries or regions, and travel is tied to the policy’s permitted area.

  • Visa-free: eligible passport, allowed purpose, no more than 30 days.
  • Transit: third-country route, eligible port, permitted area.
  • The two do not combine; choose the route that fits the whole trip.

Use the route to break a tie

If the trip already moves from one country to another with a mainland stop, transit may fit even when the stay is short. If the trip returns to the same origin or needs a longer, free-moving stay, visa-free entry or a regular visa is the better lens.
