The four official categories

The State Council and People's Bank of China payment guide describes bank cards, mobile payment, cash and e-CNY as the main methods in China's payment system. Each has a different setup path and acceptance profile.

Mobile payment is central to daily life for residents, but overseas visitors can also use international bank cards and RMB cash in many contexts. Setting up a mobile wallet before arrival saves time on day one.

Practical layering for a trip

Use a verified mobile wallet as the primary method for QR-code transactions. Keep a physical international card for merchants and machines that accept it directly, and a small amount of RMB cash for situations where neither works.

App features, supported cards, fees and transaction limits change. Treat any specific number as a snapshot to re-check, not permanent policy.

  • Mobile wallet: primary for QR-code daily spending.
  • International card: backup at supported terminals.
  • RMB cash: fallback for offline or edge-case situations.
  • e-CNY: part of the official system; adoption varies by merchant.
