Purposes the waiver covers
The MFA FAQ frames the unilateral waiver around eligible ordinary-passport holders entering for business, tourism, visiting family or friends, exchange, or transit, for no more than 30 days.
Border inspection still makes the individual entry decision, and the stated purpose should be supported by the documents you carry, such as an invitation, tickets or an accommodation booking.
- Business visits such as meetings and commercial discussions.
- Tourism and independent travel.
- Family or friends visits.
- Exchange activities and transit.
Where the waiver stops
The MFA explicitly excludes work, formal study and news coverage under the unilateral waiver. These purposes need the correct visa route, such as a Z, X or J visa.
If the plan changes after arrival from an allowed purpose to an excluded one, do not simply continue on the waiver. Check the correct route with the relevant authorities before the activity starts.
