Why the passport matters beyond validity

The MFA's basic-materials checklist lists a valid passport as a core document. For entry-route decisions, the passport category matters too: some mutual agreements cover only diplomatic or service passports, while the unilateral waiver requires an ordinary passport.

Enter the passport number and name exactly as printed when completing the online form. Mismatches between the passport and the application can delay processing or cause problems at the border.

Getting the photograph right

A photograph is the other foundation document on the central checklist. The processing mission defines the accepted format and specification, so check the current requirements on the official mission website or the MFA application system rather than reusing an old photo.

If you are unsure whether your photo meets the current standard, most photo studios can produce a compliant set once you show them the mission's specification page.

  • Check passport expiry before starting the application.
  • Match the passport category to the entry route.
  • Use a photograph that meets the current official specification.
