The official duration split
The MFA FAQ describes X1 for long-term study in China exceeding 180 days and X2 for short-term study of no more than 180 days. Match the category to the official course dates, not an approximate semester label.
Both paths depend on documents from the admitting institution, and the responsible mission may publish additional local instructions.
School documents and the post-entry step
For X1, the central page lists the admission notice and the JW201 or JW202 visa-application form for foreign students. For X2, it lists the admission notice.
The MFA page also tells X1 holders to apply for a residence permit after entry within the stated 30-day window. Confirm the procedure with the school and local exit-entry authority before arrival.
