Why the window matters

The MFA's study-visa page tells X1 holders to apply for a residence permit after entry within the stated 30-day window. Missing it can affect the legal basis for a long-term stay.

The residence permit, not the entry visa, becomes the document that covers the duration of the program. Treat the application as a required arrival step, not an optional follow-up.

Sequencing with school enrollment

Confirm the school's enrollment schedule and the local exit-entry authority's process before you fly. Some institutions coordinate group submissions or provide supporting letters for the residence-permit application.

Keep your passport, admission notice, JW form and accommodation registration available. The school's international office and the local authority are the two sources to confirm current requirements.

  • Start the residence-permit process soon after arrival.
  • Ask the school what supporting documents it provides.
  • Confirm accommodation registration is complete first.
